Garlic is a key ingredient in many cuisines around the world, not only for its unique flavor, but also for its numerous health benefits. However, storing garlic can be a challenge, as it tends to deteriorate quickly and lose its flavor. Here are some tips on how to always keep garlic fresh and intact in the refrigerator.

1. Choose High Quality Fresh Garlic

The first step in preserving fresh garlic is to select high-quality bulbs. Look for garlic with swollen, firm bulbs with tight-fitting skin. Avoid bulbs with soft areas or moldy spots, as they may have deteriorated.

2. Store Garlic in a Cool, Dry Place

Garlic bulbs should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Avoid storing garlic near heat sources, such as stoves or ovens. A pantry, cupboard or dry corner in the kitchen are great places to store garlic.

3. Do not remove the peel

Garlic bulbs should be kept in their skins to preserve their freshness. Remove only the outer paper layers before use. Leaving the skin of the cloves intact will help keep the garlic fresh and prevent it from drying out.

4. Use a Breathable Container

A breathable container, such as a mesh bag or paper bag, is ideal for storing garlic in the refrigerator. This allows air to circulate around the garlic, preventing moisture buildup and preventing spoilage. Avoid plastic bags or airtight containers that can retain moisture, encouraging the growth of mold.

5. Place the Garlic in the Refrigerator

Once you have stored the garlic in a breathable container, place it in the refrigerator. The refrigerator temperature should be between 0-4°C. Storing garlic in the refrigerator can extend its shelf life by several weeks.

6. Use Garlic Within a Reasonable Period

While refrigeration can extend the shelf life, it is always best to use garlic within a reasonable period. After a few weeks, garlic may start to lose its flavor and aroma, so it is advisable to consume it as soon as possible.
